Moss in London

Mike’s paternal grandmother was Rose Warding Moss. Very little is known about Rose and we have no idea where the name Warding comes from. Rose died in 1928 when Mike’s Dad was seven so he didn’t really know his mother.

Rose was born 15 January 1878 in Marylebone London and christened 24 March 1879 at St Peter Bayswater. She was the daughter of John and Emily Moss, his occupation was a sweep. John and Emily had a second daughter Alice Maud born 22 August 1885 and christened 13 October 1885 at St Mary Magdalene, Paddington. At the time of the Christening the parents were living at 35 Clarendon Street. Rose, aged 13, is present on the 1891 census living with her parents and sister Alice, aged 5, at 11 Clarendon Street, St Mary, Paddington, John Moss aged 43 is a journeyman and sweep.

Rose married Mike’s grandfather on 25 December 1898 at St John the Evangelist in Kilburn. On the marriage certificate Rose’s father was given as John Kenkelty Moss, a traveller.
